12 5 1STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION TOM TORLAKSON was the keynote speaker at Rio Mesa High School on Tuesday, December 2nd.  The event was to celebrate the launch of the Alliance for Linked Learning, a collaborative effort of business and education, the Ventura County Civic Alliance, to develop a stronger workforce for Ventura County.  It was hosted by the Oxnard Union High School District at Rio Mesa High School and coordinated by Mary Anne Rooney, Project Director for the Ventura County Civic Alliance.

1Boys’ Water Polo Team Wins CIF Championship!  We will hang another banner in the gym to commemorate our 11-9 victory over a tough Don Lugo (Chino Hills) squad in the CIF Finals at Irvine HS on November 22.  Congratulations to coach and Spartan alum Derrick Timmons and his amazing group of players!  Brian FitzGerald, Athletic Director

 

CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION – Students from Video Productions visit the Intro to Baking and Pastry class for filming of visit during Linked Learning event on Tuesday, December 2nd.    Intro to Baking will be offered as part of Rio Mesa’s new academy “Hospitality and Business”.

JUNIOR STATES OF AMERICA (JSA) ATTEND FALL STATE CONVENTION on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday November 23 at the LAX Marriott. The Junior State​ Representatives heard a speech from former Governor Pete Wilson and attended two days of debates and discussions. COUNSELING – Counselor Melissa Gunnels presented a workshop on organizational skills and agenda utilization to freshmen students afterschool on Wednesday, December 3.

Final countdown for senior college applications is fast approaching.  Counselors will be completing letters of recommendations from now until Winter Break

The design of 2015-16 registration menus are underway.  These will be used by students to sign up for fall classes.  Counselors will be meeting with students in the upcoming months…Kirk Raymond, Counselor

VISUAL ARTLinda Mundel, Fashion Institute of Design representative visited Diane Bolton’s photography and art classes ON Friday, November 21.  She provided a unique demonstration of various careers in film, graphics, photography and visual arts with all the students. COLLEGE & COLLEGE CENTER – The ASVAB Career Exploration Assessment was administered to 128 Rio Mesa students on Wednesday, December 3, in the gym.  Junior and senior students were tested on their proficiency in the areas of General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Vocabulary, Paragraph Comprehension, Electronic and Mechanical Comprehension and Auto & Shop Information.  This test, which is sponsored by the Armed Services, is offered free to our students at Rio Mesa one time each year.  Students are, however, under no obligation to the military by taking the test.  The test results and a personality assessment will be given to the students in January.

Maria Kelly is the new counselor assigned to Rio Mesa High School for the Indian Education Consortium.  She met with all students in the program on Wednesday, December 3.  She told the students a bit about her background and presented materials about the students’ Indian heritage…Sally Anderson, College and Career Center
