1 16 21 16WINTER CONCERT – The Music Department presented a winter concert on January 9 in the cafeteria.  The concert featured the work of all students in Color Guard, Mariachi, Choir, Marching and Jazz Band.  Various students had leadership roles while others were featured as solo performers.  A diverse program of music was presented to a fairly sizeable audience. UCSB OUTREACHAcademic Services Coordinators Robert Barrera and Luis Melgoza from the UCSB’s Early Academic Outreach Program worked with students who took the PSAT.  They provided instruction on how to understand their results and use the College Board website to obtain information to prepare for the SAT, explore majors, careers, and colleges. Special Thanks to Mrs. Tchiprout and Ms. O’Rielly for making this happen.

Financial Aid Parent Night was held for parents of seniors Tuesday, January 13.  Information was provided on financial aid, qualifying, application process, important deadlines, and more. Special thanks to Oxnard College Financial Aid Staff for taking the time to come and present to RMHS parents and students.

College Coordinator Griselda Sanchez has been meeting with EAO juniors for the past two week.  She advised students on what classes they should consider taking next year, and discusses plans for the summer, and provides recommendations on special programs and volunteer opportunities available…Griselda Sanchez-Pelayo, College Site Coordinator, Early Academic Outreach Program, University of California Santa Barbara

COLLEGE & COLLEGE CENTER – Many seniors applied for one of the 60+ scholarships offered through the Ventura County Community Foundation Scholarship by the January 12 deadline.  The new online application process was a bit confusing, so students received assistance with the application from Mrs. Anderson and Ms. Sanchez in the College and Career Center.  Seniors who submitted applications to the VCCF scholarship will be reminded that they need to submit a second transcript to VCCF by February 8 that reflects their senior year first semester grades.

Mrs. Anderson met with other career technicians in the District on Tuesday, January 13, to begin preparations for introducing the Naviance program to all freshmen students through the Health and Geography classes.  Questions were answered and materials were prepared for this roll-out…Sally Anderson, College and Career Center

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATIONCulinary Arts – Baking and Pastry finished a unit on custards that included Crème brûlée ice cream and vanilla souffléBusiness – Microsoft Office Into – fifty students passed the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Exam in PowerPoint. This was an industry standard exam that is recognized worldwide, so it is a great achievement for those dedicated students…Mary Clayton, CTE Department Chair

ADULT TRANSITION PROGRAM students have been busy.  Thirteen students started the new semester at Ventura College.  They use public transportation, and are able to access the college in Ventura from Rio Mesa.  A new job experience has been started at Walgreen’s in Oxnard, and are happy to have a new site for vocational training. A new vocational group at the Marriott in Ventura was started this week.  On a side note, one of the graduates just go a job at this particular Marriott!  The people at the Marriott were thankful he applied because they knew what a good worker he had been during his training.  Dr Gault, our retired Department Chair, helped him through the process.   We are so proud!  Connie Westphal Brown-M.S., Department Chair, Rio Mesa Adult Transition Program
