Congratulations Karina Montoya! Felicidades!  Spartan Karina Montoya represented Rio Mesa High School in the recent Migrant Education Debate competition.  Her team came in 2nd place in Regionals and they went to State competition on May 15-17 in Monterey, CA. They came in 5th place out of 12 teams!   Karina was the cross examiner on the debate team and they debated the topic of “Raising the Minimum Wage.” Way to go, Karina!   Cuba Montero, Special Programs Counselor

SPANISHSpanish 5 students are celebrating completing their rigorous AP curriculum by taking a field trip to Downtown Los Angeles to learn how  different cultures have come together to shape the southland.  They experienced firsthand the rich culture and history…Martha Jimenez-Ito, World Languages Department Chair

ENGLISHFreshmen are finishing up Romeo and Juliet and gearing up for their final.  Sophomores are working on various Legends, including the Crowning of King Arthur, Sir Lancelot Du Lake, Mists of Avalon, and, gearing up for their final (Adam Samples).  The IB juniors are working on their FOAs (Further Oral Activity) this week on part two of the IB curriculum, which is Language and Mass Communication.  They will be presenting them beginning this week and through the rest of the year for their junior IB English Final…Joan C. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAMIB testing finished up this week.   RMHS students took over 20 IB exams during the last three weeks.  Some students took as many as 14 of the 20 exams. Students access their exam scores in July, using the password and pin code provided by Mrs. Wrout, IB Coordinator.  Deadline for seniors to request that exam scores be sent to colleges and universities was May 20, 2015.

Mrs. Wrout, Mrs. Montero, Mr. Kennedy, Ms. Ricards and Mrs. FitzGerald met with current 10th grade students interested in attaining a full IB Diploma on Wednesday evening, May 20, in the library.  Over 100 invitations were sent out for this meeting, and, to date, at least 20 students are planning on working toward an IB Diploma…Lori Wrout, IB Coordinator 

600COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTERRose Marie-Murphy Cagliano was honored with a scholarship from the Somis Thursday Club at a luncheon on Thursday, May 14.  She will receive $1,000 toward college expenses when she attends U.C. Berkeley in the fall.

601Rammana Thananta was presented with a scholarship from the Camarillo Noontime Rotary Club at a luncheon on Wednesday, May 20.  She can use the $1,000 award for expenses when she attends the University of San Francisco in the fall.


National Park Rangers interviewed four Rio Mesa High School students in the College and Career Center on May 19.  The students hope to be selected for one of eleven positions in the Santa Monica Mountains Summer Youth Program.  Students from all Oxnard high schools are being interviewed for this summer job of helping with habitat restoration, plant and wildlife work, trail maintenance and visitor education.   Students will learn if they are selected by the end of May.

Final preparations underway for the Senior Academic Awards Program which will be held in the gym on Thursday, May 28, at 6:30 p.m.  Over 160 students are expected to attend where more than 300 awards for academic accomplishments and scholarships will be presented.
