WHAT’S NEW?

CAFETERIA CHANGE (FOR MONDAY) – Due to a Nutrition Services event, Monday’s lunch options will be limited to the following options: Cheeseburger, Pepperoni Pizza / Cheese Pizza, Turkey & Cheese Submarine Sandwich, and Chef’s Salad.

SENIORS PLANNING TO ATTEND OXNARD COLLEGE OR VENTURA COLLEGE IN FALL 2017 – The priority deadline to submit your application for the “OC Promise” or the “VC Promise” is TODAY, TODAY!  Find the application in your “MY VCCCD” portal and apply for this year of “free tuition!”  If you need assistance, see Mrs. Anderson in the College and Career Center.

REMINDERS…

NO ANNOUNCEMENTS IN MAY – May is testing month for AP and CAASP testing so please refrain from making ANY announcements during nutrition and lunch. Thank you!

AP TESTING IN MAY – Just a reminder that AP testing is taking place on campus during the month of May. Students are reminded to bring with them their ID card, college board card, pens, pencils, snacks and water.

RMHS SUMMER SCHOOL – Summer school application forms along with the Learn 4 Life Master agreements need to be submitted by May 12th, 2017.

SUMMER SCHOOL – Attention current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders! Summer school enrollment is now available! Please see your counselor to sign up by May 12th.  As a reminder, summer school will take place on July 5 – July 28; Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 12:40 pm.  Bussing will be available.

INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE – Rio Mesa will be offering an Introduction to Chinese class this summer. You will be able to earn 5 elective credits if you pass the class. Summer class schedule is from 8:00am to 12:40pm, Monday through Friday, from July 5 to July 28. Buses are available for summer school this year. Please see Ms. Sy in room#15 or room#20. You can also email her at irene.sy@ouhsd.k12.ca.us or see your counselor. Hurry, deadline for registration is Friday, May 12.

GIRLS GOLF – Anyone interested in trying out for Girls Golf for next year, please see Lauri Scott, the Athletic Secretary, in the front office to sign up for the tryout.  Tryouts will be held on Tuesday, May 16 at 5:00 pm at Sterling Hills Golf Course in Camarillo.

SENIORS – Cap & Gown Distribution will take place on Tuesday, May 16th during econ and government classes.

DANCE SPRING SHOW – Come out and support the Rio Mesa Dance Students in their annual spring show “Elements” Friday, May 19th at 7:30 PM at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.  Tickets will be on sale the week of the show for $10 pre-sale and $12 at the door.  See Ms. Scholler in the dance room, Mrs. Erickson in ASB or any dance club officer.  Hope to see you all there!”

DO SOMETHING GOOD FOR SOMEONE – Ms. Connelly is looking for a few good-hearted male students to help host a girl(s) to a Special Needs Prom the night of May 19th. It is an awesome experience. If you are interested, please see Ms. Patty Connelly in room 66 ASAP.

LINK CREW – Play day for link crew will be on May 24th from 4 – 6 pm in the gym.

SENIOR PANORAMIC PICTURE – Senior panoramic pictures will take place on Thursday, May 25th in the gym followed by field senior activities. Bring money for food. Meet in the gym at 10 a.m. to take attendance.

ATHLETIC CLEARANCE PHYSICALS – RMHS Athletic clearances will take place on June 8th in the activity & wrestling rooms. The cost for physicals is $20 (see attached flyer).

LOVE TO DANCE? – Do you love to dance? Looking for something FUN to do this summer? NEW!! We are offering a Dance Camp this summer! Explore many kinds of dance and improve your skills! Students will receive 2.5 elective credits and have fun this summer! See Ms. Scholler in PE or Mrs. McDevitt in the counseling office to sign up. Class runs July 5 – 28th from 9 am to 12 pm.

College & Career

SENIORS – If you are planning to major in Civil Engineering at a four-year college or university in Fall 2017, there is a $1,000 scholarship for which you should apply.  You must have earned a 3.5 or better GPA in high school.  The deadline to apply is May 26.  Pick up information and an application in the College and Career Center.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – All students are invited to apply to be a volunteer teaching assistant in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math for a summer school program in Camarillo.  You would be assisting 3rd-5th grade students Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. between July 17 and August 4.  Pick up a flyer with information in the College and Career Center.

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS – African-American students who are current 10th or 11th graders are invited to apply for a paid summer internship with the Pinkard Youth Institute.  Students would be assisting and learning at a workplace that matches their area of career interest, such as public safety, politics, civil service, etc.  The program runs for 6 weeks, from June 19 to July 28 and the student would receive a stipend of $100 per week.  Applications are available in the College and Career Center.

JUNIORS – Attention Juniors, Class of 2018! Do you want to apply to a UC, CSU or private university and NOT have a stressful senior year? RMHS EAOP is offering the College Ready Academy (CRA) in August! It’s free and you will complete your college applications, review for the ACT and SAT and begin your college essays with experts! If you are interested and want more information, please sign up with Counselor—Ms. Gomez. Spots are limited!

MAY SCHOLARSHIP LIST – The May Scholarship list is not available in the College and Career Center. There are still a few scholarships for which Seniors can apply for free money for colleges. Pick up a list today.

COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE LETTERS – Seniors who have been accepted for admission to a four-year college or university need to submit a copy of their letter of acceptance, for the college to which they will attend, to Mrs. Anderson in the College and Career Center.  Please submit these letters NOW, before the deadline of Monday, May 15.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS – SENIORS – As you learn that you have been awarded scholarships or grants from the college you will attend, or a scholarship from any type of community organization, please bring the notification of award to Mrs. Anderson in the College and Career Center.  Deadline to bring these letters of awards is Monday, May 15. You are to be honored at the Senior Academic Awards Program on May 31, but only if you inform Mrs. Anderson of your awards.

2017 SUMMER CAMPS AVAILABLE! JULY 5-JULY 28, MONDAY – FRIDAY. High school students of all grades are invited to enroll in one of our free countywide summer camps designed to introduce exciting career options in a variety of industries, offered through the Career Education Center/ROP Program. Each camp will specialize in a specific pathway in subjects as diverse as virtual reality, performing arts, health professions, and digital media. Each camp will feature field trips, guest speakers, and special hands-on projects designed to engage and inspire students in the fascinating details of each career option. High school credit is available. The summer camps will run from July 5- 28, Monday-Friday, at high school campuses across the county.  See your counselor for a list of classes and registration form, or visit: http://www.vcoe.org/career-education-center/summer-camps

CURRENT SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS – If you are interested in taking an ROP course next year, please see your counselor for a list of class choices available.   ROP courses prepare students for careers by providing experiences that are engaging and involve real life learning.  Classes are available day and evening and include careers across every industry sector.  Many new classes have been added, some include, Criminal Justice-Law Enforcement, Fire Science Careers, 21st Century Marketing and Sales, and Sport Entertainment and Marketing, to name a few.  See your counselor or Mrs. McDevitt today for the complete list and to sign up.  Courses are assigned as first-come first-served basis with limited room.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: The California State Parks system is now hiring Seasonal Park Aides at Point Mugu and Leo Carrillo State Parks.  You must be 16 years of age or older, able to read, write, and speak English, and have the ability to follow directions and learn work procedures.  If hired, you will be paid $10.43 an hour, and you will be required to purchase a uniform which costs approximately $150.  Pick up information and the application form in the College and Career Center.

Ongoing Events

THE SUPPER PROGRAM! We will be serving free meals from 3:30 -5:00 pm in the cafeteria. Anyone in the community, 18-years and younger, may enter our campus and enjoy a meal. All meals must be consumed on the premises.

ATTENTION ALL SPARTANS – We are excited to let you know you are now able to buy tickets for home sporting events online prior to the game. Simply go to the following website: http://gofan.co/app/school/CA8023. Click on the game you want to support and then provide the payment information. Your ticket is then on your smart phone and can be redeemed at the door/gate. It’s that simple! Any questions, please see Miss Gina at the ASB window. Go Spartans!!
