A2A ATTENDANCE RECOGNITION – Rio Mesa High School was one of two District schools recognized by the Board of Trustees at their meeting of October 11, 2017, for best performance with attendance in four key areas:  Truancy Rate, Excused Absences, Chronic Absenteeism and Conference Addressed Rate.  AP Alexis Ortiz and Attendance Advisor Lily Duran Rubio accepted plaque on behalf of Rio Mesa High School.  A2A is a company the District contracts with that supports the District with attendance data and School Attendance Review Board meetings….Alexis Ortiz, Assistant Principal

ATHLETICSBoys’ Water Polo Varsity team has overall record of 13-6, and League record of 5-0.  Since the teams last loss, the Spartans have won 7 straight.  Come out and support the seniors on October 19, as we take on Channel Islands for Senior Day!

Girls’ Volleyball beat Pacifica on Tuesday, 3-0 25-16 25-15 25-18.  Undefeated in League 5-0 and 14-8 overall.  Ranked number 5 in Division 4.  Home match on October 12 against Hueneme, away match on October 17 against Oxnard, last match of league October 19 against CI.   With 2 more wins, girls will clinch share of first League Title in school history…Chris Ruffinelli, Athletic Director

CAREER/TECHNICAL EDUCATIONCulinary Foundations is doing a unit on quick breads and prepared cheddar bay biscuits. Business Multimedia students have been diving into the various uses and applications of Adobe Photoshop…Mary Wayne, Dept. Chair

SCIENCEHealth students have been learning about Mental Illness and Suicide.  Earth & Space Science CP wrapped up a unit on The Expanding Universe by doing a Claims-Evidence-Reasoning on The Big Bang Theory.  Earth & Space Science Honors are learning about wavelength & frequency, performing calculations involving electromagnetic radiation, and investigating Hubble’s Law doing a lab looking at red shifts of various galaxies and graphing the data.  Biology CP students have completed their focus on biochemistry through the McMush Lab and the Enzyme Catalysis Lab.  Chem Study modeled isotopes and calculating average atomic mass by doing an isotope lab using a new element, Beanium…Beulah Espinoza, Science Department Chair

UCSB/EAOP OUTREACH – This week, EAOP College Site Coordinator Karen Correa collaborated with RMHS Counselors, and facilitated a California State University Application Workshop for Seniors.  Students were able begin their CSU Application, receive guidance, and ask questions. This Friday, October 13, EAOP is taking a group of Seniors and Juniors to UCSB for Achieve UC, an event that motivates students to strive for an education at a University of California. Students will participate in a mock lecture, meet the UCSB Chancellor and Admissions staff, and go on a campus tour…Karen Correa, UCSB Outreach/EAOP Site Coordinator

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER –  Oxnard College Reps Luke Menchaca and Cassy Marcum, assisted senior students with community college applications on Monday, October 9.  Twenty-three students took advantage of these early application workshop sessions held each class period.  Six additional community college application workshops scheduled before end of December 2017.

Senior students urged to attend the Cash 4 College Workshops to complete FAFSA/Dream Act applications for financial aid.  Oxnard, Ventura, and Moorpark Colleges will each hold workshop on Saturday, October 14, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Flyers listing necessary documents to take to workshop were distributed to seniors.

On Tuesday, October 10, University of California-Santa Barbara Rep Myles Parrino, presented to students about UCSB and many topics including student life and admissions requirements during lunch in the C&CC.

During the Senior Activities Assembly in the RMHS Gym, on Wednesday, October 11, Mrs. Anderson informed senior students about the importance of continuing their education beyond high school.  She presented information about the many workshops that are being offered to assist students with college and financial aid applications.  She explained the several types of colleges and financial aid available to help pay for college.  She encouraged students to check the Student Bulletin for workshops, college representative visits, and events offered through the C&CC and UCSB/EAOP Site Coordinator.

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Matthew Zaragoza hosted a table of information outside the C&CC on Thursday, October 12.  He spoke with students about opportunities available to them through enlistment in the U.S. Army…Sally Anderson, College and Career Center Tech

COUNSELORS Kristy Kenney, Karen Correa and Cuba Montero attended the CSUCI Counselors’ Conference on Friday, October 6 and learned about nursing and engineering programs and the new CSU Application website and process.

Counselors met with all seniors individually this week to review graduation status, assign Cyber High classes, if needed, and discuss post-secondary plans.  Each senior received their TES form and the RED Senior Packet which includes college deadlines and free workshop information.   Go Class of 2018!

SPECIAL PROGRAMS – Cuba Montero and Maria Luna presented Student Success Parent Workshop in Spanish on Thursday, October 12, in the library.  Parents learned about high school graduation requirements, grades, A-G, colleges and Parent Vue. The next workshop will be in English on Thursday, October 19th in the library at 6:30 pm.

Ventura County Indian Education Counselor Lindsay Smith met with RMHS Native American students on Thursday, October 12.
