SPARTAN NEWS

WHAT’S NEW?

TODAY!!! The U.S. AIR FORCE recruiter will have a table of information outside the College and Career Center on Wednesday, November 1, during the lunch period.  Ask questions about opportunities available to you through enlistment in the U.S. Air Force.

TOMORROW: The SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY representative will have a table of information outside the College and Career Center, during the lunch period, on Thursday, Nov. 2.  Come ask questions about this college located in upstate New York, and ask what issues should be considered when attending an out-of-state university.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS: Spartans! Please join us this Friday, Nov. 3 for our second annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. We will honor our loved ones who have passed away with art, Baile Folklorico dancing, Mariachi de Rio Mesa, and activities for kids. Admission is free, but please bring some money for our taquero and vendors. Taco plates (with rice, beans, and a drink) start at $6. We’ll have face-painting, and a raffle, too. We’ll also be taking donations for earthquake recovery in Mexico City and Oaxaca. Bring your friends or family members! See you there!

LASO CLUB: New and current LASO Club members: The Latin American Student Organization meetings days have changed from Tuesdays to Wednesdays. We meet in Room 22 at 12:25. We’ll be talking about our upcoming Dia de los Muertos event, a potluck, field trips, and fundraising. All students are welcome. See you there! Gracias!

ARE YOU AN ACCOMPLISHED PIANO PLAYER??  The Riverpark Lutheran Church is looking to hire a high school or college student to provide music for their Sunday church services.  This is a great opportunity with good pay!  See Mrs. Anderson in the College and Career Center for a flyer with information.  (11/15)

SPARTAN Students, faculty and staff: The Latin American Student Organization (LASO) is hosting its second annual Dia de los Muertos cultural celebration from 6-8pm on Friday, November 3. Please join us to celebrate and remember our loved ones who have passed away. There will be music, dancers, activities for kids, student art and projects, vendors, and a taquero. If you’re interested in helping LASO club prepare, please come by Room 22 at lunch or after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Last year was fun. Let’s make this year even better. Gracias!

STUDENTS:  Please return your Overdue Text and Library Books NOW! Not sure if you owe? The Textbook Room is open at 7:30 daily. Stop by and see Mrs. Petti to make sure your book record is clear!

2017/2018 YEARBOOKS: This year we are only selling preordered yearbooks, therefore you cannot buy it after the deadline. Buy your yearbook by March 1st.  Yearbooks are $85.00 with an ASB card or $95 without. After October 31st, the yearbook will cost $100. To buy your yearbook today, see Ms. Erickson in the ASB office. Fundraiser coming up soon to lower the price of the yearbook.

Clubs & Athletics

GIRLS SOCCER: Girls soccer tryouts will be held on Oct. 30 – Nov. 3 from 3:15 pm to about 5:00 pm.  Please make sure you have created an account on www.athleticclearance.com and have uploaded your physical to that account prior to tryouts.  All students must be athletically cleared in order to tryout and participate in sports.

INTERESTED IN WRESTLING? Any boy or girl interested in wrestling, please see Coach Flores or Coach Gregorchuk as soon as possible.  You must enroll in period 6 wrestling.  (11/3)

CORNHOLE CLUB: Rio Mesa’s Cornhole Baggers Club meets every Thursday at 12:30 in Room 3. Cornhole Kick Off Tournament is November 1st during lunch.

TEQUIO CLUB: The Tequio Club will meet every Tuesday at lunch in room 80A. Come to learn about indigenous cultures and/or share your heritage! All are welcomed.

College & Career

EAOP / UCSB OUTREACH INFO:

College Essay: Need help with your UC Personal Insight Questions, Common App Essay, Supplemental Questions, or CSU EOP Essay? Please stop by the EAOP Classroom, Room 34, and get help from Ms. Correa.

EAOP Senior Meeting: EAOP seniors we will be meeting in room 34 on either Wednesday, November 1st or Thursday, November 2, 2017 during lunch or afterschool (please refer to the pass you were given in third period).

Financial Aid Workshop: Wednesday, November 8th, 6:00 – 8:00 PM, English in Room 34, Spanish in Room 25.

SENIORS:  If you are applying to a four-year college or university you must take the SAT or ACT exams by the DECEMBER test date.  The last days to apply, by regular registration, are as follows:  SAT – regular registration deadline is November 2 for the December 2 test; ACT – regular registration deadline is November 3 for the December 9 test.  Pick up information in the College and Career Center or in room 34.  Don’t delay, sign-up today.

IB TEST TAKERS:  All IB test takers please be advised the ASB window will be CLOSED all day Friday, November 3rd. Remember the last day to purchase your IB tests is Tuesday, November 7th. Do not wait until the last day; PLEASE plan ahead!

MESA: Attention students with an interest in STEM: You are invited to join the weekly MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) meetings in Room 30 on Wednesdays at lunch. Our club aims to shape scientific minds by introducing hands on experience with science projects and activities to nurture and strengthen your interests.

JUNIORS AND SENIORS:  The ASVAB Career Assessment test will be given on Wednesday, December 6 in the RMHS Gym.  This test will assess your knowledge and skills and then suggest careers you might wish to pursue after high school.  A permission slip must be signed by each of your morning teachers and your parents.  Pick up a permission slip in the College and Career Center (C&CC) today.  Completed permission slips must be returned to the C&CC no later than Wednesday, November 29.  Hurry and sign up TODAY!

REAGAN LEADERSHIP SUMMIT:  All Students are invited to register for a leadership workshop to be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.  You will learn how to work as a team and inspire others to reach their goals.  The cost is $45, which includes admission to the Titanic Exhibit, a Summit t-shirt and conference admission.  You must register by November 3.  Pick up a flyer in the College and Career Center with information about how to register.

EAOP / UCSB OUTREACH: If you have not signed up for the SAT/ACT, please stop by Room 34 to sign up during nutrition, lunch, or after school.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE: The International Baccalaureate test registration for May exams is taking place now through November 7.  Registration ends on Tuesday, November 7.  Please turn in your registration materials along with payment to Mrs. Erickson at the ASB window.

Students who qualify for assistance must bring the qualifying letter or email they received from the school district to Mrs. Montero, the IB counselor. She will provide a verification form that MUST be attached to a student’s IB test registration materials.  This must be completed BEFORE visiting Mrs. Erickson.

ATTENTION 12TH GRADERS: Do you need an ACT and/or SAT fee waiver? Please see Ms. Montero in the Counseling Office during nutrition, lunch or after school only. Colleges accept test scores through December 2017.

CONTESTS AND COMPETITIONS:  Want to win CASH or other PRIZES?  Pick up a listing in the College and Career Center of Contests and Competitions that are available for you to enter.  You’ll find contests for creative and essay writing, creating a poster or video, and coding a software app.  Pick up information in the College and Career Center.

FARM TO SCHOOL: The Farm to School Program has a Twitter page and we urge you to follow them at https://twitter.com/OUHSDfreshfood. The Twitter account will be sharing information about the school menu, SNAC Clubs, school garden, and districtwide farm to school activities.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  Earn Community Service hours by helping the VC Arts Council prepare for the Dia De Los Muertos celebration taking place at the Pacific View Mall.  Help is needed NOW to create decorations, participate in music, and create poems for the dearly departed.  The celebration will be November 5TH.  Pick up a flyer with information in the College and Career Center.

ATTENTION SPARTANS: Are you a member of a Native American tribe or have a certificate? You may qualify for Ventura County Indian Education Consortium services. Please see Ms. Montero for the application and more information.

Ongoing Events

LATE BUS: The late bus will begin taking students home starting on Monday, September 11th.  The bus will run Monday-Thursday and depart from the front of RMHS @ 4:35 pm.  Flyers are available in the front office.

LOST & FOUND ITEMS: The office has a box with many lost and found items in it. If you’ve lost any articles of clothing, backpacks, lunch bags, amongst other things, please come claim them.

SUPPER PROGRAM: We are now serving our SUPPER program from 3-5pm every day. ANYONE from the community, 18-years and younger, may participate in this program. Please note: On minimum days, we offer the supper program after school from 12:18-12:45 only.
