S P A R T A N     U P D A T E

ATHLETICS –  On Friday, November 10, the Rio Mesa Spartan Football team continued marching towards their goal of winning a CIF championship, as they defeated the Royal Highlanders 41-7.   Spartans travel Friday, November 17, to Kaiser High School in Fontana for a quarterfinal game, game time is 7 p.m.  GO SPARTANS!!  Chris Ruffinelli, Athletic Director

UCSB OUTREACH – On Tuesday, November 14, UCSB Outreach Site Coordinator Karen Correa and Jeff Holloway accompanied twenty-five (25) Rio Mesa seniors and CIHS seniors to visit UCLA and CSULA. Students were able to speak with former RMHS and CIHS seniors about the transition from high school to college. They also toured both campuses.  EAOP College Site Coordinator, Karen Correa, also collaborated with RMHS Counselors for Financial Aid presentations. With the support of EAOP staff from CIHS and Fillmore High School, seniors created FSA ID and started their financial aid application.  Shout out to Mr. Holloway who chaperoned on the field trip and to all RMHS Counselors for their support. “Entrée to Employment” Cal Lutheran University – Rio Mesa students Ryan Weaver, Michael Joshua Alejandrino, Jesus Hernandez, Issiah Ciricuti, Sarah Torres and Daniel Venegas attended “Entrée to Employment” event at Cal Lutheran University on Wednesday, November 15.  Entrée to Employment brings together high school, adult education and community college students with real-world employers in Ventura County.  The event provided a unique opportunity to share, engage, and connect to the future business world.…Irene Sy

 CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATIONCulinary CCAP (Careers through Culinary Arts) students Savannah Wilkinson, Ryan Stevens, Mireya Rivera and Chloe Casta volunteered to serve dinner at Falkner Farms for the Farm Day Dinner.  Sophomore MERIT students are constructing projectile launching devices (think catapults or trebuchets) to demonstrate the application of simple machines.  Two weeks ago, all MERIT Academy students went to Aviation Career Day at the Camarillo Airport. There they met with employers involved in aviation in our local community. A number of our students experienced piloting aircraft through the use of the full-cockpit flight simulator. One of our students even won a drone!  Mary Wayne, CTE Department Chair

ACTS OF KINDNESS CLUB provided “Thanksgiving goodies” on Wednesday, November 14, for office staff and teachers in remembrance of being kind to as many people as possible…Norma Villarreal, Club Advisor

SCIENCEHealth students are finishing nutrition unit on Friday.  Bio H and CP finished a plant plasmolysis microscope lab.  Biology CP are finishing the Cell Unit.  Integrated Physics and Chemistry are learning about polymers by making slime……Beulah Espinoza, Science Department Chair

 

ASB held its annual Leadership Lock-in recently with RMHS Alumni Scott Boczek leading the way.  Over 35 students stayed up all night long in the gym…Carl Melhorn, ASB Advisor

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER – Moorpark College Rep Angeline Gonzalez, from Moorpark College led an application workshop for students to work on their community college applications on Monday, November 13.  Fifteen students took advantage of her assistance and either began the process or completed and submitted their applications to either Oxnard, Ventura or Moorpark Colleges.

Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Los Angeles Rep Kacie Schweikhardt provided students information outside the C&CC during lunch on Wednesday, November 15.  This college that grants certificates and bachelor’s degrees in all aspects of the fashion industry.  RMHS will be starting a Fashion Club, sponsored by FIDM.

On Friday, November 17, Mrs. Anderson attended the Oxnard College Counselor Exchange.  She heard presentations about the programs offered at Oxnard College, as well as application process, and Oxnard College Promise…Sally Anderson, College and Career Center Tech

Seniors –  Do you need an ACT and/or SAT fee waiver?  See Ms. Montero in the Counseling Office during nutrition, lunch or after school only.    Colleges accept test scores through December 2017.

Spartans – Are you a member of a Native American tribe or have a certificate? You may qualify for Ventura County Indian Education Consortium services – see Ms. Montero for information and application.
