S P A R T A N     U P D A T E

WINTER DANCE SHOW “Bravo” was presented by the Rio Mesa Dance students on Friday, January 19.  Two performances took place in the Virginia Bennett Gymnasium at RMHS.  The performances were well-attended and enjoyed by all!  Congratulations to Ms. Scholler and students!      Save the Date – Spring Dance Show – May 18, Oxnard Performing Arts Center.
ENGLISHDrama Club (Verity Oliff) successfully presented “Hospital” by Tim Kelly at Rancho Campana PAC on Saturday, January 20.  English 2H (Period 4), students had a successful Socratic Seminar focusing on “Civil Disobedience” and “Letter from Birmingham Jail. English 2H is working on their Annotated Bibliographies for their Global Challenges and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). IB 3 HL students are preparing for Paper 1 practice and continuing to analyze texts. All English classes are reviewing and preparing for Finals.  Sandra Tchiprout, English Department Chair
COUNSELORS attended Ventura County School Counselor Association (VCSCA) Conference “Strategies to Help Students Manage their Emotions” on Friday, January 26…Cuba Montero, Mentor Counselor
 SPECIAL PROGRAMSMigrant Education and ELAC Parent Meeting was held on Tuesday, January 23.  Parents were provided information about services provided to English Language Learners.  Ventra County Public Health Rep. Ms. Gomez provided Nutrition and Health Workshop…Cuba Montero, Mentor Counselor
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTEROxnard College Reps Cassy Marcum and Luke Menchaca, held Community College Application Workshop on Monday, January 22, during lunch.  Several senior students took advantage of their expertise to ask questions and work on their community college applications.  The Spring Schedule of Community College Application Workshops was distributed.  Senior students are encouraged to apply to a community college as their chosen college destination, or as a back-up plan.  Six application workshops have been set up, as well as two Ventura College transcript “Assessment” sessions. Two field trips, one to Oxnard College (February 23) and one to Ventura College (April 6), are also scheduled for those who have applied to Oxnard or Ventura Colleges.
Mrs. Anderson attended meeting of District Career Techs to discuss preliminary plans for the Thirty-Third Annual Career Expo for Juniors and Seniors at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center on March 9.  In addition to visiting with representatives of various careers, students can attend workshops on soft skills (resume writing, interview techniques, etc.).  Rio Mesa High School will send two busloads of students to the Expo, contact Sally Anderson, College and Career Center Guidance Tech
