TEEN DRIVING COURSE: Students and their parents are invited to attend a Smart Teen Drivers program offered by the Oxnard Police Department. This two-hour interactive course will include tips on safe driving, collision avoidance and alcohol related incidents. First session is being held on Tuesday, June 12th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. STUDENTS IN GRADES 9, 10, and 11, who are 16 years of age or older, are invited to apply for a summer internship program through the Pinkard Youth Institute. Students will have the opportunity to experience real work/career situations and will be paid $100 a week stipend for the 6 weeks of the program which runs June 18 through July 27. Applications are due May 21. Pick up information from Lauri Scott in the main office.

THIS WEEKEND! ROBOTICS CLUB COMPETITION: Saturday, May 5th, Rio Mesa’s Robotics Team 6553 “Roboticus” will be demonstrating their competition robot at the FIRST Lego League competition at Monte Vista Middle School in Camarillo. Other local teams, including some from OUHSD and Ventura, will also be demonstrating their robots with a mini competition. The teams will also he lending a hand where needed to assist in the FLL competition. All team members are invited to participate, everyone else is invited to check out what FIRST is all about. SPRING MUSIC FESTIVAL! On Tuesday, May 15th, from 5-7 pm, there will be a Rio Mesa High School celebration of our students and their music! It will be held in the quad, there will be food trucks, and students will perform for parents, teachers, and anyone else who wants to attend! They were really incredible when they performed at the OUHSD Music Festival!! Admission is free! Please stay after school that day, if you can, and support the Arts here at Rio Mesa!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most scholarships are for Seniors, but other grade students should become familiar with scholarships for which they might apply their senior year. SENIORS: Priority Registration for classes at Ventura, Oxnard, and Moorpark College’s begins on April 23!!! To get priority registration you must have completed the five application steps, 1) submit online application, 2) set up your MyVCCCD portal, 3) Completed online Orientation, 4) submitted a transcript for Assessment, and 5) completed a group counseling session at the college. Don’t delay, take care of this process TODAY. Without priority registration you might not get the classes you want.
HACKATHON BY THE SEA – Girls Edition: The first Girls-Only Hackathon will take place from June 22 to June 23. This is a coding event in which teams “hack” together to create an awesome project like a game, website, or app. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are provided as well as door prizes, awards, and plenty of swag. JOB OPPORTUNITY: Merlin Medical Supply Pharmacy, in Camarillo, is looking for a motivated, fast learner, hard worker to help, part-time, at this medical supply retail store. Job entails scanning medical documents, shipping medical products and assisting customers. Employer will train and hopes student will go to college locally so he/she can continue to work at this store. Starting pay is $10.50 per hour. COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE LETTERS – Seniors who have been accepted for admission to a four-year college or university need to submit a copy of their letter of acceptance, for the college to which they will attend, to Mrs. Anderson in the College and Career Center. Please submit these letters NOW, before the deadline of Tuesday, May 15.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS – SENIORS – As you learn that you have been awarded scholarships or grants from the college you will attend, or a scholarship from any type of community organization, please bring the notification of award to Mrs. Anderson in the College and Career Center. Deadline to bring these letters of awards is Wednesday, May 16. You are to be honored at the Senior Academic Awards Program on May 30, but ONLY if you inform Mrs. Anderson of your awards.

JUNIORS AND SENIORS: Would you like to learn more about the election process? Apply for a position as a Student Poll Worker, for the Gubernatorial Primary election on June 5. You will be paid for training and working the entire day of elections. You must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, be at least 16 years old, a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident, and have a teacher sign your application. JOB OPPORTUNITY: The California State Parks system is hiring part-time, seasonal workers at Leo Carrillo State Park, Malibu Creek State Park, and Point Mugu State Park.
