MIGRANT EDUCATION AWARDS NIGHT
Was held on Tuesday, June 5th, 6:30 p.m., in the cafeteria. Students were recognized for their academic accomplishments. Thirty-eight freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors received a certificate for passing all classes and earning all credits first semester this school year. Twenty-one freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors received an academic medal for maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher overall. The participants of the Migrant Ed Speech and Debate team were recognized with a certificate of participation. Ten seniors were awarded graduation medals and college t-shirt, which include Hancock College, Oxnard College, Ventura College, CSUCI and UC San Diego. ¡Sí se puede! ¡Felicidades! SPARTAN UPWARD BOUND GRADS
On Sunday, June 3rd, 10 Rio Mesa High School students graduated from the Upward Bound Program in a ceremony held at California Lutheran University, Samuelson Chapel. President Chris Kimball welcomed everyone to the ceremony, and an inspiring keynote address was given by Joe S. Ramirez. Students earned a certificate honoring their accomplishments, and a stole to wear at their high school graduation. Students were also given a rose and encouraged to pass it on to someone who had a significant impact on their education. ENGLISH 2 HONORS SHOWCASE took place on Friday, May 25. Michelle Martinez and Verity Olliff’s English 2 Honors classes have been working on a project in which they conducted a substantial amount of research on specific global challenges. SOCIAL SCIENCE Rio Mesa was honored to host the amazing and inspirational, Holocaust Survivor, Mendel Fischman, on June 4. Sophomores in attendance at assembly were enveloped in Mendel’s story of perseverance and strength. A huge thanks to Heidi Holmes for lending us her wonderful father. MESA END OF YEAR CELEBRATION was held on Thursday, May 31. Principal Mark Contreras and Dr. Micaela Morgan, MESA and Pathways Programs Director, welcomed students and parents. Current and future leadership were introduced, and seniors were presented with certificates and soles. ASB HONORED CAMPUS SUPERVISOR RUBEN MARTINEZ as part of their efforts of appreciation following the order of Dude. Be Nice organization. SCIENCE – Marine Biology is finishing up semester two with a unit on Marine Mammals. Students learned about polar bears, sea otters and the difference between seals and sea lions, Toothed and baleen whales. Biology did an invertebrate comparison and dissected both a squid and crayfish. We will do a quick unit on vertebrates at the end of the week. Beulah Espinoza, Science Department Chair
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER – Oxnard College Outreach Reps. Cassy Marcum and Luke Menchaca, assisted seniors who plan to attend Oxnard College in the Fall with a Class Registration Workshop during lunch on Tuesday, June 5. Several students registered for Fall classes.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Anderson welcomed students from each period of Beulah Espinoza’s classes to the C&CC. She described the services and resources available to students. Students asked questions and had time to explore materials available to them.
Two military recruiters hosted a table of information during the lunch. On Wednesday, June 6, Airman Julian Jimenez, of the U.S. Air Force. On Friday, June 8 Staff Sgt. Devin Hobson of the U.S. Army.
