WHAT’S NEW?
VENTURA COLLEGE-FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE: Seniors planning to attend Ventura College in Fall 2018 should speak with the representative from Ventura College’s FYE program about the help they can provide, including early registration, tutoring, and activities.  Come to the table of information outside the College and Career Center on Thursday, Feb. 15, during the lunch period.
OC FRIDAY: Permission slips for the field trip to OC FRIDAY are due to Mrs. Anderson in the College and Career Center by Tuesday, Feb. 20.  Seniors who have applied to Oxnard College for Fall 2018 should submit your completed permission forms to Mrs. Anderson before Tuesday.
REMINDERS
UPWARD BOUND:  Attention 9th and 10th grade students:  Upward Bound will be on our campus today, Wednesday, February 14 during lunch to talk to students about the program. They have extended their application deadline! Upward Bound is a program through California Lutheran University that helps prepare first generation, low income, 9th and 10th grade students prepare for and complete college. If you are accepted in to the program you will get to attend a free 6-week program at CLU where you will live in the dorms, take classes, and experience life as a college student. Throughout your remaining high school years you will receive many benefits, including tutoring, workshops, college and career guidance, field trips, and college tours. If you are interested, please visit their information table on February 14th, or see Mrs. Kenney in the counseling department. (2/14)

CYBER HIGH: Cyber High for second semester will now be held on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s from 3:10 to 4:10 on Wednesday with Ms. Fong in room 28 and Thursday with Ms. Guizar in room 39.
OFFICE AID STUDENTS: Does your password not work?  If you are trying to log on with your new password, please make sure you pay attention to the case sensitivity.  If it still does not work, see either Dr. Gil or Ms. Guizar.  You must complete the online work as part of your course grade.
SENIORS: Grad Night tickets are now on sale…you will need to get a field trip permission form from Miss Gina in the ASB office before you can buy your ticket.
2017/2018 YEARBOOKS: This year we are only selling preordered yearbooks, therefore you cannot buy it after the deadline. Buy your yearbook by March 1st.  Yearbooks costs $100. To buy your yearbook today, see Ms. Erickson in the ASB office. Fundraiser coming up soon to lower the price of the yearbook.
Clubs & Athletics
CORNHOLE CLUB: Rio Mesa’s Cornhole Baggers Club meets every Thursday at 12:30 in Room 3.
FAITH HOPE LOVE CLUB: The faith hope love club meets Wednesdays at lunch in room 73.
LASO CLUB: New and current LASO Club members: The Latin American Student Organization meetings days have changed from Tuesdays to Wednesdays. We meet in Room 22 at 12:25. All students are welcome. See you there! Gracias!
TEQUIO CLUB: The Tequio Club meets every Tuesday at lunch in room 80A. Come to learn about indigenous cultures and/or share your heritage! All are welcomed.

JUNIORS & SENIORS – Sign up now for the OUHSD STUDENT CAREER EXPO.  This once a year field trip event will be held in the morning on Friday, March 9, at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.  Students can talk with representatives about possible career options, learn about effective communication and work ethics, and pick up a lot of free stuff!  Pick up your permission papers in the College and Career Center for this field trip.  The busses WILL fill up, so pick up and complete your forms today.
JUNIORS AND SENIORS:  Would you like to learn more about the election process?  Apply for a position as a Student Poll Worker, for the Gubernatorial Primary election on June 5.  You will be paid for training and working the entire day of elections.  You must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, be at least 16 years old, a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident, and have a teacher sign your application.  Pick up information and an application in the College and Career Center.
ADVANCE PLACEMENT EXAMS: It’s that time of year to sign up for your Advanced Placement Exams! You can purchase your AP tests at the ASB window. Forms are available from your AP teachers and the ASB window.  Starting price is $94 for the first test. If you are a free and reduced candidate, please have the form filled out prior to purchasing your tests. AP Fee Waivers can be obtained from counselor, Ms. Montero, during nutrition, lunch or after school BEFORE March 8th! The starting price for the free and reduced is $25. The ASB OFFICE HOURS are 7:30- 7:50 a.m. and 9:54- 10:14 a.m., 12:16 – 12:51 pm and 2:59 – 4:00 pm (regular schedule).  Advanced Placement Exams Sales: Sales begin: Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 and Sales end: Friday, March 8, 2018 (all numbers are due to the DO with a HARD deadline).  **** Reminder: All AP and IB students DO NOT sign up for exams on the same day.
SAT Academy: Juniors there will be an SAT Academy on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 9:00 – 1:00 PM in Room 34. Prepare yourself for the SAT on MARCH 7th! Please sign up with Ms. Correa in Room 34.
SENIORS:  The February Scholarship List is now available in the College and Career Center.  There are 20 new listings this month, including the Rio Mesa Scholarship Foundation applications for any senior with a GPA of 3.5 or better.  There are also some with no GPA requirement. Pick up a copy and apply for these free sources of money!!
RAZA COLLEGE DAY: Students and Parents are invited to attend an all-day conference at UCSB called “RAZA College Day” on Saturday, April 21. Transportation, food, workshops and entertainment will be provided.   Students can go to this website to register http://elcongresodeucsb.weebly.com.  See Karen Correa, in room 34, for information.
SENIORS PLANNING TO ATTEND OXNARD COLLEGE IN THE FALL should sign-up for the field trip to Oxnard College for “OC FRIDAY.”  You need to have submitted your OC online application, and set up your MY VCCCD portal to qualify for the field trip.  Pick up a permission slip from Mrs. Anderson in the College and Career Center TODAY.  Permission slips will be collected until February 20 or until the bus fills up.
HEY SPARTANS! **If you need to change a class for semester 2, please complete a program change form and turn in to your counselor with signatures as soon as possible.
MIGRANT ED STUDENTS! It’s time to join and prepare for the Migrant Ed Speech and Debate tournament! For more information and to sign up, please see Ms. Julissa Vasquez, the new coach, in the main office. The first competition is March 17th and practices are starting now!!
JUNIORS:  USC (The University of Southern California) is offering a program to assist high-achieving Junior students, who have financial need, with career planning, admissions & financial aid guidance, test prep, and leadership development during a three-week summer residential program on USC’s campus.  This program, called USC Bovard Scholars, is a FREE (no cost to you!!) program.  Deadline to apply is February 16. Go to scholars.usc.edu  for more information and pick up a flyer in the College and Career Center.
FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS: The last RMHS Financial Aid Workshops in English and in Spanish will be February 22, at 6 pm in room 34 and 25. Seniors and their parents will get one on one help with the FAFSA or California Dream Act in the computer lab. (2/22)
DO YOU WANT TO BE PART OF EAOP? Ask Ms. Correa in room 34 and learn how you can enroll in the program.
JOB OPPORTUNITY:  The California State Parks system is hiring part-time, seasonal workers at Leo Carrillo State Park, Malibu Creek State Park, and Point Mugu State Park.  Applicant must be 16 years of age and will be required to buy a uniform for the approximate cost of $150.  Starting pay is $11 per hour.  Pick up a flyer of information and an application in the College and Career Center.
MESA: Attention students with an interest in STEM: You are invited to join the weekly MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) meetings in Room 30 on Wednesdays at lunch. Our club aims to shape scientific minds by introducing hands on experience with science projects and activities to nurture and strengthen your interests.
FARM TO SCHOOL: The Farm to School Program has a Twitter page and we urge you to follow them at https://twitter.com/OUHSDfreshfood. The Twitter account will be sharing information about the school menu, SNAC Clubs, school garden, and districtwide farm to school activities.
ATTENTION SPARTANS: Are you a member of a Native American tribe or have a certificate? You may qualify for Ventura County Indian Education Consortium services. Please see Ms. Montero for the application and more information.
Ongoing Events
LATE BUS: The late bus runs Monday-Thursday and departs from the front of RMHS @ 4:35 pm.  Flyers are available in the front office.
LOST & FOUND ITEMS: The office has a box with many lost and found items in it. If you’ve lost any articles of clothing, backpacks, lunch bags, amongst other things, please come claim them.
SUPPER PROGRAM: We are now serving our SUPPER program from 3-5pm every day. ANYONE from the community, 18-years and younger, may participate in this program. Please note: On minimum days, we offer the supper program after school from 12:18-12:45 only.
