APRIL IS ART MONTH! On Thursday, April 4, the 10th annual IB art show will be held at the Camarillo Ranch House from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. On Tuesday, April 9, the District Art Show will be held at the Maritime Museum with reception starting at 5:30. All month long a sculpture exhibit: Mr. Contreras, I Shrunk the Kids! will be on display in the library. Come check out artwork from Ms. Basden’s 1st and 2nd period 3-D Sculpture class.

The Channel Islands Chapter of the Links is hosting a community workshop and panel discussion for the parents of students in grades 6-9 that are targeting them to become college-bound students. It is designed especially for those seeking to gain information for youth entering college majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts or Math. GIRLS WHO CODE: This summer there will be a Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program for 10th and 11th grade girls going into their junior or senior year. This is a free 7-week program and it’s a great opportunity that looks good on college applications. Girls who Code also provides travel and housing stipends for eligible applicants. Participants will learn about computer science, gain exposure to tech jobs, and join a sisterhood of girls who are using computer science to become change-makers. Coding experience is not required. RECYCLE FOR SIGHT BOX: The students from the Leo’s Club have placed a box in the office for eye glasses that you no longer want but can be recycled. If you have eye glasses that you no longer use but are still in good condition, we will take them. Lions club takes them all over the world for those in need. The box is in the office, but you can send to room 75 as well.
WHAT I NEED (WIN) APP: The “WHAT I NEED” app empowers homeless or resource-insecure youths and adults to locate free supportive services. WIN’s searchable database enables users to find and connect to hundreds of essential programs offering: shelter, food, medical care, crisis support, drop-in centers, government benefits, legal counsel, transportation, jobs, educations, and different hotlines. It is designed for vulnerable youths ages 12-25. All providers represented in the WIN directory offer assistance and services to unaccompanied youth who simply walk in, (allowing vulnerable youth to obtain essential services without pre-screening or referral). Also included are agencies who serve unique populations including foster youth, LGBTQ youth, youths struggling with mental illness, pregnant or parenting teens, and young veterans as well as victims of assault or sexual violence, sexual exploitation, and/or domestic abuse. The app serves as a valuable tool for the community at large.

10th Annual Young Artists Series
With the objective of connecting our youth to live performance of classical music, The Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra announces auditions for young artists to perform as soloist with the orchestra in its 10th Annual Young Artists Series in January-February 2020. The auditions will be structured as follows:
- Applicant shall reside or attend school in Ventura County.
- Applicant shall be 21 years or younger on 15 January 2020.
- Applicant shall provide a reference recommending her or him for the auditions. The reference shall be a music teacher, music coach or other leader in the musical community.
- Applicants who performed with the orchestra at the Young Artists Series in January 2019 are not eligible to audition again this year but may do so in future years.
- 15 May 2019: Due date for submittal of application and YouTube link to a recording
- End-May 2019: Finalists selected and announced
- Mid-June 2019: Finalists’ live audition
- July 2019: Final selections announced
Up to four of the participants in the live auditions will be selected to perform a movement of a concerto, an aria or art song or one or more other types/pieces of music appropriate for performance with a chamber orchestra. An application with a YouTube link of the applicant performing a music selection will be submitted for the first round of auditions. The submitted recording should present a piece of music the applicant has ready now and is intended for performance with the orchestra. The submitted selection must be queued and readily accessible on the recording. The application should list at least two additional pieces from which final selection* can be made by the Artistic Director. The live auditions will be held in mid-June 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 1338 East Santa Clara Street, Ventura CA 93001. The Annual Young Artists Series in January-February 2020 may be presented twice, once in Camarillo and once in Ventura.
