RMHS Bulletin for Monday, 4/29/19


Rio Mesa Staff and Faculty and Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen, Monarch will be here Tuesday and Wednesday of this week to take everyone’s ID picture for the 2019-20 school year. PLEASE do your best to get your picture taken. Taking your picture now means an ID awaits you at the start of the new school year to use at dances and football games. An ID picture taken with Monarch is FREE. Wait for Miss Gina to take it and it will be $10 (I reserve the right to raise that price at my discretion), no exceptions! Juniors this is NOT your Senior picture. Your Senior pictures will be done throughout the summer and fall on your own schedule. You must take a picture this week to have an ID.

Seniors: Ventura College is having registration workshops on their main campus on April 29th and May 2nd from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. See Ms. Magana if you have any questions.

What’s Happening?

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS (ESPECIALLY SENIORS): There are only eight (6) Saturday schools left. If you need to make up unverified absences come and see Mrs. Ramirez, attendance advisor in the front office. Seniors CANNOT have 3 or more unverified absences otherwise you will not be eligible to participate in senior activities such as (grad-night, prom, walking the line for graduation, extra-curricular activities). Also, if you do not receive a reminder slip for Saturday school that does not mean you don’t have Saturday school. It is still your responsibility to attend all dates assigned to you.

SENIORS…The year is quickly coming to an end! If you have lost TEXT or LIBRARY books, you will NOT be allowed to attend prom, gradnite, or receive your diploma! IF YOU OWE…YOU WON’T GO! Notices have been mailed to your parents. TAKE CARE OF BOOK BUSINESS NOW! DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO RETURN OR PAY FOR LOST BOOKS!!! Please see Mrs. Petti in the Book Room. She is open at 7:30 a.m. to assist you.

CLOTHING DRIVEThe One People Club is collecting new, and slightly used clothing for the homeless population.  You may turn in your items to Miss Stancil’s room 44, or any one of your teachers.  Let’s show the community our Spartan Pride by helping those in need!

AUDITIONS FOR YOUNG ARTISTS: The Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra is auditioning for new talent for the 10th Annual Young Artists Series happening in January – February 2020. Applications must be submitted by May 15, 2019. Please see information attached.

Clubs / Athletics

FAITH HOPE LOVE CLUB (FHL): FHL invites everyone to join us as we pray for our school, the year, our country, etc. FHL will meet every Wednesday at lunch.

MESA: Attention students with an interest in STEM: You are invited to join the weekly MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) meetings in Room 12 on Wednesdays at lunch. Our club aims to shape scientific minds by introducing hands on experience with science projects and activities to nurture and strengthen your interests.

STUDENT NUTRITION COUNCIL: The Student Nutrition Council’s SNAC Club meets every Tuesday in room 47.  Help try new foods for the cafeteria, earn volunteer hours

RMHS JUNIORS’ SAT AND ACT REGISTRATION DRIVE: Stop by room 34 during Nutrition, Lunch, or after school to get help registering for the SAT or ACT.

GIRLS WHO CODE:   This summer there will be a Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program for 10th and 11th grade girls going into their junior or senior year. This is a free 7-week program and it’s a great opportunity that looks good on college applications. Girls who Code also provides travel and housing stipends for eligible applicants. Participants will learn about computer science, gain exposure to tech jobs, and join a sisterhood of girls who are using computer science to become change-makers. Coding experience is not required. VOLUNTEER AT THE CAMARILLO LIBRARY:  Several opportunities are available to earn community service hours by volunteering at the Camarillo Library.  You might help by being a Homework Coach, a Technology Coach, be on the Teen Advisory Board, or help at Special Events.  A volunteer application is available in the College and Career Center.

Ongoing Events

RECYCLE FOR SIGHT BOX: The students from the Leo’s Club have placed a box in the office for eye glasses that you no longer want but can be recycled. If you have eye glasses that you no longer use but are still in good condition, we will take them. Lions club takes them all over the world for those in need.  The box is in the office, but you can send to room 75 as well.

WHAT I NEED (WIN) APP: The “WHAT I NEED” app empowers homeless or resource-insecure youths and adults to locate free supportive services. WIN’s searchable database enables users to find and connect to hundreds of essential programs offering: shelter, food, medical care, crisis support, drop-in centers, government benefits, legal counsel, transportation, jobs, educations, and different hotlines. It is designed for vulnerable youths ages 12-25. All providers represented in the WIN directory offer assistance and services to unaccompanied youth who simply walk in, (allowing vulnerable youth to obtain essential services without pre-screening or referral). Also included are agencies who serve unique populations including foster youth, LGBTQ youth, youths struggling with mental illness, pregnant or parenting teens, and young veterans as well as victims of assault or sexual violence, sexual exploitation, and/or domestic abuse. The app serves as a valuable tool for the community at large.

ATTENTION STUDENTS! You need a pass from your teacher to go to the Health Office for medical care, except in the following instances:

  1. You are actively bleeding, or
  2. You are having an asthma attack with labor / difficulty breathing, or
  3. You are escorted by a staff member, or
  4. To take medication, or
  5. You have a true emergency.


Auditions for Young Artists

The Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra

10th Annual Young Artists Series

January-February 2020

With the objective of connecting our youth to live performance of classical music, The Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra announces auditions for young artists to perform as soloist with the orchestra in its 10th Annual Young Artists Series in January-February 2020.  The auditions will be structured as follows:


1.   Applicant shall reside or attend school in Ventura County.

2.  Applicant shall be 21 years or younger on 15 January 2020. 

3.  Applicant shall provide a reference recommending her or him for the auditions.  The reference shall be a music teacher, music coach or other leader in the musical community.

4.  Applicants who performed with the orchestra at the Young Artists Series in January 2019 are not eligible to audition again this year but may do so in future years.


1.  15 May 2019:                      Due date for submittal of application and YouTube link to a recording

2.  End-May 2019:                  Finalists selected and announced

3.  Mid-June 2019:                  Finalists’ live audition

4.  July 2019:                           Final selections announced


Up to four of the participants in the live auditions will be selected to perform a movement of a concerto, an aria or art song or one or more other types/pieces of music appropriate for performance with a chamber orchestra.  An application with a YouTube link of the applicant performing a music selection will be submitted for the first round of auditions.  The submitted recording should present a piece of music the applicant has ready now and is intended for performance with the orchestra.  The submitted selection must be queued and readily accessible on the recording.  The application should list at least two additional pieces from which final selection* can be made by the Artistic Director.  The live auditions will be held in mid-June 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 1338 East Santa Clara Street, Ventura CA 93001.  The Annual Young Artists Series in January-bruary 2020 may be presented twice, once in Camarillo and once in Ventura.

*  Final selections will include considerations of rental availability and cost and suitability of the piece for performance with the orchestra.
