STUDENT NEWS

Rio Mesa students are pleased with the new café tables and chairs in the library!  We’re also eagerly awaiting arrival of four new HABA stools (on back order) for casual library seating.  

English Department

9th and 10th grade English classes are wrapping up reading assessments to identify strengths and weaknesses in reading skills in English and Content Areas.

Back to School Night

Big Thanks to all Rio Mesa Families & Friends that joined our wonderful Faculty & Staff at our 2019-20 Back-to-School Night last night! Thank you to our PFO, various county services at info tables, & clubs selling food along with Band, Cheer & Mariachi for entertainment! WE>me!

Back to School Night West Campus

Remind picked Rio Mesa High School to sponsor $100 worth of snacks for our staff.  They wanted the staff to know that there was no obligation, they only wanted to thank us for the work we do with our students.

YC&C showing our Maintenance Staff appreciation on behalf of our students! They’re a very important group on our campus that wk behind the scenes to get what we need. The lines on the fields, mowing of lawns, moving of furniture…all the little things that we tend to forget.

Library

More good news – our slow, rather unreliable presentation computers and our library and textbook circulation computers have all been replaced.  All items were purchased with LCAP funds supplied through the district – thank you Dr. McCoy!!

Career Center

RMHS Financial Aid Night

On Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Rio Mesa High School hosted our first Financial Aid Parent Workshop! We were able to assist over 80 students and parents total! A special thank you to Ventura College who sent over financial aid experts to assist our families, the RMHS College and Career Center (Karen Correa, Natalie Magana, and Javier Evangelista), and Dr. Gil. Our next workshop will take place on Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm; Room 34: English and Room 25: Spanish.

12th Grade Financial Aid Account Set Up

The Early Academic Outreach Program in collaboration with Oxnard College, RMHS College and Career Center, and RMHS Counselors assisted all senior students with the student section of the financial aid application on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. A special thank you to Ms. Magana for reminding all senior students to bring in the appropriate information, to Oxnard College for sending Mayra Hernandez and Fidelia Flores (Financial Aid Specialist), and the Rio Mesa Counselors for providing additional support. The financial aid applications (FAFSA or California Dream Act) opened October 1st and the deadline for the application is March 2, 2020.

SAT Academy: Strategies

On Saturday, September 28, 2019 over 30 Rio Mesa Seniors and Juniors signed up to work on strategies for the upcoming SAT School Day exam. This Academy consist of two session, the first session focuses on strategies students can use to tackle SAT questions and the second session where students will take a practice SAT exam on Khan Academy, a free online resource for SAT preparation. A special thank you to Daniel Cortes, EAOP Academic Service Coordinator and Karen Correa, EAOP College Site Coordinator for hosting the academy! The school day SAT will be on Wednesday October 16, 2019 at Rio Mesa High School.

RMHS College Parent Night

The College and Career Center in collaboration with RMHS Counselors hosted a College Parent Night on Thursday, September 26, 2019. Representatives from the University of California, California State Universities, Community College and Financial Aid informed parents about the options their students have after high school. Parents of Juniors and Senior were invited. We had over 60 parents present! A special thank you to all of our presenters (Catherine Villa-Real, CSUCI; Yesika Hernandez, Ventura College; Laura Maldonado, Oxnard College; Javier Evangelista, Destination College Advising Corps; and Karen Correa, Early Academic Outreach Program) and RMHS Staff (Sylvia Gomez, Kristene Kenney, Rafael Cahue, and Natalie Magana) for supporting! Shout out to Horacio Lujan, a senior who volunteered his time to help with setup!

12th Grade Senior Deadline Presentation

During the month of September, the Early Academic Outreach Program stopped by the senior English classes to talk to students about upcoming application deadlines. Students were provided with SAT and ACT test dates, a college application checklist, and an account manager to help them organize their usernames and passwords.  A special thank you to Griselda Sanchez and Marisol Luna-Lopez (EAOP College Site Coordinators) for assisting with the presentations!

UC Application Workshop

On September 6, 2019 the Early Academic Outreach program hosted a University of California application workshop during the school day. Seniors who were eligible to apply for UCs were able to receive one on one assistance. A special thank you to Javier Evangelist and Natalie Magana for helping with the workshops! An extra THANK YOU to Mrs. Wrout and Mr. Holloway for helping us with specific IB related questions! Stop by the College and Career Center to learn about more upcoming college application workshops.

Props 2 RM’s UC EAOP Coordinator, Karen Correa, College&Career Center Tech, Natalie Magaña, DCAC Javier Evangelista, & Asst Principal, Dr. Blanca Gil who hosted a financial aid workshop last night attended by over 80 guests- SHOUT OUT 2 Ventura College Financial Aid Specialists!


This past Monday September 30th, UCSB’s Destination College Advising Corps (DCAC) held a Common App Workshop. This workshop supported students interested in applying to any Private or Out State Universities. For any other students who where not able to attend this workshop the College and Career Center, will be holding another workshop Monday November 4th. A Cal Lutheran representative will be on campus on this day, providing additional support for all students filling out the Common App. For any students interested in attending this workshop, they are encouraged to stop by the center and sign up.

Congrats RM Girls Volleyball on the 3 games to 0 win over Pacifica in the “Kills For a Cause” game (25-13 25-13 25-21). Caitlyn Donart 9 kills 8 digs; Rachel Brown 8 kills; Kimmy Rice 25 assists 5 aces; Sophie Esherick 18 digs. Spartans Elevate-Together We Rise! WE>me!

Congrats to RM Varsity and JV Boys Water Polo – both teams beat OHS 16-6 in home league match-ups. On JV Noah Hernandez scored 10 goals! Spartans Elevate-Together We Rise! WE>me!
