WHAT’S NEW?

ATTENTION UPWARD BOUND APPLICANTS: Don’t forget to turn in your completed Upward Bound applications to Ms. Kenney’s office by February 13th! (Exp. February 13)

What’s Happening?

THE FIRST DRAGG OXNARD POLICE PROGRAM: The DRAGG program is open to all high school students between the ages of 15-18 that have an interest in the automotive industry and job exploration. Students can earn 5 credits for participating. Students who have successfully completed the DRAGG program will take away valuable experience that they can apply to careers in the automotive industry and life skills that are valuable in any career. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm – 7:00pm. Classes start Thursday, February 13th. Applications can be picked up in the College and Career Center or with your counselor. You can also find them in the College and Career Center google classroom (code: stta7wd). (Exp. February 13)

ORMOND BEACH CLEAN-UP PROJECT: Please help us clean and restore Ormond Beach on Saturday, January 25, 2019 at 8:30am-12pm. Volunteers will assist with removing invasive plants, cleaning up trash, and planting native plant seeds. See flyer below for more information.  (Exp. February 22)

SENIORS: Grad nite tickets are on sale at the ASB window, however you must fill out a field trip authorization form with Parents’ signatures prior to purchasing your ticket. If you plan on attending both Grad Nites you will need two separate field trip forms. Please be advised, Rio Mesa has a NO Refunds Policy for Grad Nite purchases, NO Exceptions. Any questions please stop by the ASB window. (Exp. June)

CARING CLOSET: There is still items for those who need hygiene items or jackets. You can speak to an adult you trust on campus or come by room 75. (No Exp.)

DREAM IT BE IT PROGRAM: The Dream It, Be It program can help you plan your future! When you participate in this program you will learn about setting and achieving goals, choosing careers and identifying alternatives to obstacles to ensure success, and how to move forward when things don’t go as planned. Females in the 9th grade are encouraged to join us for a day of learning and fun! Breakfast and lunch will be provided. For more information and to sign up please see Ms. Magaña in the College and Career Center. Space is limited! (No Exp.)

SENIORS: If you would like to get a fee waiver for the ACT, please see Ms Montero in the Counseling Office during nutrition, lunch or after school. If you could like a fee waiver for the SAT and did NOT get one last year, please see Ms Montero in the Counseling Office during nutrition, lunch or after school. If you already took the SAT with a fee waiver last year, you get your fee waivers for 2019-2020 from your online College Board account. (No Exp.)

Clubs / Athletics

EVENT STAFF CLUB: Get involved on campus! Join Event Staff to volunteer at home sporting events and other school activities. Come see Mr. Holdsworth in room 24 for information. Events are updated every Monday. (No Exp.)

MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM AND ELD STUDENTS: Do you need help with homework? After School Tutoring is available on Tuesday and Thursday in the library from 3:15pm to 4:15pm with Ms. Gonzalez. (No Exp.)

College & Career

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT: The last two financial aid nights are on Thursday, February 6th and Wednesday, February 26th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in room 34 and room 25. In order to complete your financial aid applications you must bring student and parent 2018 taxes and W2’s. Once complete, be sure to check in with the staff in the college and career center to be entered in the upcoming raffles! Remember if the class of 2020 reaches their goal of 80% complete, RMHS will have an ALL senior music festival or dance. (Exp. February 26). 

COLLEGE PRESENTATIONS: On Monday, February 3rd Grand Canyon University will be on campus during lunch time! They will be providing information about their university and will also have information on a free fly in program!

On Wednesday, February 5th Holy Names University will be on campus during 3rd period providing more information about their university! This institution has rolling admission so it is possible for you to enroll the same day! If you have any questions or would like to listen to the presentation please sign up in the College and Career Center with Ms. Magaña. (Exp. February 5)

EAOP FIELD TRIP: Sophomores and Juniors in the EAOP! EAOP is coordinating their annual Education, Leadership Careers conference at UC Santa Barbara next Saturday; February 8th, 2020 from 7:30AM – 4:00PM. This is an opportunity for you to come visit UCSB’s campus, learn more about the UC Admission process, participate in mini mentoring sessions with professionals, and hear from a dynamic keynote speaker. If you are interested in participating, have questions or concerns about this event; contact Ms. Magaña or Mr. Javi in the College & Career Center. There is a form that you will need to sign in order to participate in this event so make sure to give yourself enough time to pick up, sign and submit prior to the date of the event! (Exp. DIA DE FAMILIA AT CSU CHANNEL ISLANDS: Cal State Channel Islands is hosting Dia De Familia on Saturday, February 8th from 12:00-4:00 p.m. They will be having workshops in Spanish on how to support their student pursue a college education, Financial aid workshops, STEM workshops, etc. If interested see flyer below or contact Elizabeth.villa@csuci.edu. HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST: Are you a cancer survivor? Have you helped a family member or friend deal with Cancer? Share your story. For more information visit www.cancersupportvvsb.org Submissions must be received by midnight, Saturday, February 29, 2020. (Exp. February 29)

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS: Students please remember to notify Ms. Magaña immediately upon receiving any scholarship awards so that she will know to include you in the Rio Mesa High School Annual Senior Academic Awards Program, to be held on May 27, 2020. (Exp. May 27)

ATTENTION SENIORS: If you have unverified absences, please see Mrs. Ramirez in the attendance advisor’s office to resolve them. Grad-Night tickets will be on sale soon, but you will NOT be allowed to purchase a ticket if you do not meet attendance requirements. (Exp. June)

OXNARD COLLEGE STEM SUMMER PROGRAM: Oxnard College invites you to be a part of a STEM summer experience you will never forget! Get hands on STEM field experience and enhance your STEM and life skills. This experience is FREE and students may earn 5 elective credits. Lunch will be provided daily. Space is limited! INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: Bank of America is looking for the next generation of community leaders. If you are a junior or senior in high school and are working to make a difference in your school or community, we want to support you.

As a Student Leader, you will participate in an eight-week paid internship at a local nonprofit organization where you will learn first-hand about the needs of your community and the critical role nonprofits play. In addition, you will learn valuable civic, social and business leadership skills. Each Student Leader will attend the Student Leaders Summit held in Washington, D.C. where you will learn how government, business and the nonprofit sector work together to address critical community needs.
