SPARTAN NEWS

WHAT’S NEW?

SENIORS:  Only 6 of our entire senior class has applied to earn the seal of biliteracy.  The due date is next Friday, March 5th.  Normally we have about 70 applicants.  Don’t be left out! Before you apply online, you need a copy of your transcript, CAASSP scores and AP or IB scores. Apply online by going to oxnardunion.org and then they can put seal of biliteracy seal on the sear bar. See your world language teacher if you have any questions. (Exp. March 5)

What’s Happening?

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT: The last two financial aid nights are on Thursday, February 6th and Wednesday, February 26th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in room 34 and room 25. In order to complete your financial aid applications you must bring student and parent 2018 taxes and W2’s. Once complete, be sure to check in with the staff in the college and career center to be entered in the upcoming raffles! Remember if the class of 2020 reaches their goal of 80% complete, RMHS will have an ALL senior music festival or dance. (Exp. February 26). 

SENIORS: Grad nite tickets are on sale at the ASB window, however you must fill out a field trip authorization form with Parents’ signatures prior to purchasing your ticket. If you plan on attending both Grad Nites you will need two separate field trip forms. Please be advised, Rio Mesa has a NO Refunds Policy for Grad Nite purchases, NO Exceptions. Any questions please stop by the ASB window. (Exp. June)  

ATTENTION SENIORS: If you have unverified absences, please see Mrs. Ramirez in the attendance advisor’s office to resolve them. Grad-Night tickets will be on sale soon, but you will NOT be allowed to purchase a ticket if you do not meet attendance requirements. (Exp. June)

Clubs / Athletics

EVENT STAFF CLUB: Get involved on campus! Join Event Staff to volunteer at home sporting events and other school activities. Come see Mr. Holdsworth in room 24 for information. Events are updated every Monday. (No Exp.)

MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM AND ELD STUDENTS: Do you need help with homework? After School Tutoring is available on Tuesday and Thursday in the library from 3:15pm to 4:15pm with Ms. Gonzalez. (No Exp.)

College & Career

HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST: Are you a cancer survivor? Have you helped a family member or friend deal with Cancer? Share your story. For more information visit www.cancersupportvvsb.org Submissions must be received by midnight, Saturday, February 29, 2020. (Exp. February 29)

 COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Seniors who plan to attend Oxnard or Ventura College next Fall are encouraged to sign up for OC Friday or Pirate Friday! These are field trips to the community colleges where you will have the opportunity to tour the campus, find out about the programs and resources they offer AND have a free lunch on campus! Also, for students who are interested in taking advantage of the two free years at either school please remember that a financial aid application (FAFSA or CA Dream Act) MUST be completed by March 1st to be eligible! Space for the field trips is limited. Please see Ms. Magaña for a field trip form. (Exp. March 1) 

CAREER EXPO: Expo OUHSD is hosting it’s 35th annual Career Expo on Friday, March 20th from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Juniors and Seniors are invited to meet and network with professionals from various fields! This is an opportunity to ask the professionals about their career path, the education, and other requirements needed in their chosen profession. If you are interested in attending please see Ms. Magaña in the College and Career Center. Space is limited. (Exp. March 20) 

SCHOLARSHIPS: Spartans please be sure to check out the monthly scholarship list that can now be found on the Rio Mesa website AND in the college and career center’s google classroom! Seniors, the RMSF scholarship is now available and is due on March 23rd. Please be sure to pay close attention to deadlines and apply, apply, apply! Google Classroom code: stta7wd (Exp. March 23)

EMMA NYLEN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Approximately 20-50 scholarships are provided through the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Ventura Emma Nylen Trust Fund every year. Amounts awarded may vary from $100-$1,000. In order to be considered, you must have a GPA of at least 2.0 or higher, and either currently be or have been in the past, a resident of Ventura County. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Do you need volunteer hours? The Reel Guppy Outdoors is now looking for volunteers to help at their Boat Burger Throwdown that is taking place on May 1st. This is an opportunity to make a difference in the community while creating fun, lasting memories for children and families! Some of the duties include helping set up, knot tying, breaking down set up and assisting families with other needs. Knowledge of fishing isn’t necessary but is appreciated. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS: Students please remember to notify Ms. Magaña immediately upon receiving any scholarship awards so that she will know to include you in the Rio Mesa High School Annual Senior Academic Awards Program, to be held on May 27, 2020. (Exp. May 27)

DREAM IT BE IT PROGRAM: The Dream It, Be It program can help you plan your future! When you participate in this program you will learn about setting and achieving goals, choosing careers and identifying alternatives to obstacles to ensure success, and how to move forward when things don’t go as planned. Females in the 9th grade are encouraged to join us for a day of learning and fun! Breakfast and lunch will be provided. SENIORS: If you would like to get a fee waiver for the ACT, please see Ms Montero in the Counseling Office during nutrition, lunch or after school. If you could like a fee waiver for the SAT and did NOT get one last year, please see Ms Montero in the Counseling Office during nutrition, lunch or after school. If you already took the SAT with a fee waiver last year, you get your fee waivers for 2019-2020 from your online College Board account. (No Exp.)

OXNARD COLLEGE STEM SUMMER PROGRAM: Oxnard College invites you to be a part of a STEM summer experience you will never forget! Get hands on STEM field experience and enhance your STEM and life skills. This experience is FREE and students may earn 5 elective credits. Lunch will be provided daily. Space is limited! INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: Bank of America is looking for the next generation of community leaders. If you are a junior or senior in high school and are working to make a difference in your school or community, we want to support you.

As a Student Leader, you will participate in an eight-week paid internship at a local nonprofit organization where you will learn first-hand about the needs of your community and the critical role nonprofits play. In addition, you will learn valuable civic, social and business leadership skills. Each Student Leader will attend the Student Leaders Summit held in Washington, D.C. where you will learn how government, business and the nonprofit sector work together to address critical community needs.
