Athlete of the Week

Semester 2 (2023)

Brodie Anderson, a junior, and Raymond Arceo-Zavala, a junior, are playing better and better each week on the tennis team. They swept their doubles matches versus Oxnard, 3-0. 

Sarah Coccillos, a softball-playing junior, helped the team to three wins on the week. She was 5 for 10 with 2 doubles, a 3 run walk off home run and 5 RBIs. 


 

Nick Santander, a senior on the swimming team, is Ventura County Champion in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle, and 100 Freestyle. He is the only boy swimmer in the county to be a 3 event champion. He is also the team captain and a 3 time team MYP. 

JayDee Castro and Aaliyah Custodio are both junior beach volleyball players who won both of their matches this week against Hueneme and Oxnard High Schools. They won the deciding match against Oxnard for RMHS to win the dual. 


 

Jasmine Reyes, Junior softball pitcher, started 3 games and threw 3 complete games. She also had 2 shutouts and 0 earned runs allowed. In the Suzanne Manlet Tournament, she had 29 strikeouts for 2 wins and 1 tie. 

eSports Freshman, Arturo Banos, moved up to varsity at the last second and helped the team secure their second win of the season in the final round of the final matchup against an undefeated team. Coach Jacquez says that he is an "amazing player and always looking to improve himself, shows dedication and a strong work ethic by participating in both Track and Field and eSports."


 

Mariana Palazuelos, a senior softball player, was 5/7 with a double, 2 HRs, 7 RBIs, and a 2.42 OPS. She is an everyday backstop and anchors our offensive production. She has carried the team to 2 wins. 

Jacob Roa, an 11th grade baseball player threw a complete game. In 7 innings, only 3 hits were allowed, 1 walk with 1 earned run and 8 strike outs. Coach Regalado says: Jacob Roa has earned his second win of the season and is improving his ERA to 0.16 with his complete game performance and notching the first league win of the year for Varsity Baseball."


 

Harnoor Singh, an IB Diploma Candidate Junior, had an awesome performance when he dominated Nordhoff HS (Ojai) winning all 3 sets (6-0, 6-0, 6-0). Handily Harnoor is a strong opponent in the #1 spot as RMHS #1 Varsity Players. 

Freshies, Jasmine Torres and Kylie Lan, won one of their first two matches of the season and of their beach volleyball careers when they played St. Bonnies and Foothill Tech. 


 

Brooklyn Bittner, a freshie on the RMHS wrestling team, is the highest ranking female wrestler Rio has ever had. With her 4th place finish at CIF, she has also qualified to compete at the Masters Tournament in Palm Springs on February 18. 

Our senior, Anthony Garcia, is the CIF champion for Wrestling. 


 

David Perez, a Rio Mesa wrestler, upset the #1 undefeated seeded senior to win the Channel League Championship to become the League champion. Congratulations to this junior!

Sophia Ford, a Rio Mesa wrestler, is a 9th grader who won the 170lb Individual Channel League Championship (2-0). She is our only female League Champion this year. 


Fall 2022

Nicholas Weinerth, Senior
Cross Country

Nicholas Weinerth had a phenomenal race on Sept 15th at the Woodbridge Invitational, a race that featured some of the top runners not only in the Southern Section California, but some of the best in the country. Nicholas, a senior, won the Varsity Red Division Race with a time of 14 minutes and 50 seconds, averaging 4:53 pace per mile and lead most of the race by himself.

Anna Dahlquist, 10th grader, ran 20:21 and came in 9th place at Woodbridge Invitational.

A senior who is a 3rd year on varsity. Fundamentally he is fantastic, and he’s easily one of our most intelligent players in the pool. A fantastic support player who is also a nasty surprise when taking his shots.

Jill led the team in kills and digs for the last three matches.

Noah led the team in ejections drawn and goals in their first three games.

This number one doubles team is undefeated in non-league competition. They are leading the Spartans to a two-win zero-loss non-league record early this season.

This football player had an outstanding game against Camarillo.  He had 14 carries for 124 yards and 3 TD.  He averaged just under 9 yards per carry.  J'lin's outstanding effort helped the team to a huge victory over Camarillo.

Chosen by her coach for her relentless effort on every play in the games vs. Santa Paula and St. Bonaventure.

In the Saugus game, Tristan played Offensive Tackle and Defensive End. Offensively, he played a solid game, and defensively, he had 3 tackles, a sack, and a hurry
